Housing Design

Sustainable Housing in Kiviruukki, Espoo 2026

The 2026 Housing Design Studio was organized in collaboration with the City of Espoo. Students developed proposals for Kiviruukki, a former industrial and warehouse area set to evolve into a new urban district for approximately 9,000 residents and 3,000 workers. The area aims to become a model for sustainable urban development, combining efficient land use, public transport and local services.

The studio investigated how the transition towards circularity could reshape housing design through the development of a model quarter. Each proposal focused on one or two themes identified in the preliminary urban plan: adaptability, biodiversity, mixed housing typologies, communality and circular construction.
