Dress code of the Ceremonial Conferment at the Schools of Technology

The dress codes for Honorary doctors and Doctors at the Schools of Technology are listed below. Information about the Doctoral hats is also provided here.

The regalia of a Doctor of Science in Technology

The regalia of a Doctor of Science in Technology always include the doctoral hat. In addition, men can choose to wear an embroidered velvet collar and women a brooch.

Doctoral hat

The emblem on the doctoral hat of a Doctor of Science in Technology is a lyre made up of a flame, sym­bolizing wisdom and work, ‘labor et scientia’, placed inside a steel ring surrounded by a golden laurel wreath. A special feature of the hat worn by Doctors of Science in Technology is its curled brim.

The doctoral hats with names of the Promovendi shall be delivered to the Ceremonial Conferment Committee beforehand. Details of the delivery will be given in www.aalto.fi/ceremony-week in May.

Also guests are welcome to wear their doctoral hats during the day event. In the evening the hats will be left on the reception hall shelves.

Velvet collar

The specially embroidered velvet collar worn by Doctors of Science in Technology is embroidered in black silk on each lapel of the tailcoat. Since the collar is permanently attached to the tailcoat, a hired or borrowed tailcoat cannot be used.

Brooch

The lady doctor’s regalia include a black velvet 6*8 centimeter oval brooch, which has the same symbol as the hat lyre, embroidered in black silk. The brooch is attached on the left side of the dress, below the collarbone (not too low). If the lady doctor is wearing other medals, the brooch should be worn on the left, in the place of the Star Brooch of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, below other official decorations. The brooch is worn at academic events.

Honorary decorations

Honorary decorations can be worn both during the Act of Conferment and the Banquet. Also guests are welcome to wear their honorary decorations.

During the day event no white pocket square us worn, if a tailcoat. At the ceremonial evening event, a white pocket square is not to be used at the same time as the honorary decorations.

Doctoral hat

When ordering the hat, please make sure it is a doctoral hat for the Aalto University Schools of Technology. It is also possible to borrow a hat for the ceremony. In such a case, the hat should be that of a Doctor of Science in Technology, it should look new and be the right size.

Black full-length dress (long sleeves, high-neck, no long slit) black shoes and tights, no jewellery, no headdress or fur, honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Promovendi, male

Tailcoat (black waistcoat) black socks and black lace-up leather shoes with thin sole (no patent shoes), honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Promovendi's guest, female

Solemn, short, black or dark dress (not too open), black shoes, no gloves, no jewellery, no headdress or fur, honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Promovendi's guest, male

Tailcoat (black waistcoat) or dark suit, black socks and black lace-up leather shoes with thin sole (no patent shoes), honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Invited guests

Men: same dress code as the male promovendi or dark suit, women: solemn short dress. For both male and female guests: honorary decorations and doctoral hat.

 

Ceremonial banquet and ball

Tailcoat (white waistcoat), black socks and black patent lace-up leather shoes with thin sole, honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Promovendi, female

Full-length evening gown (not black nor white), jewellery, honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

Promovendi's companion, male

Tailcoat (white waistcoat), black socks and black patent lace-up leather shoes with thin sole, honorary decorations, doctoral hat.

General instructions:

  • Guests who were awarded an honorary decoration by the Finnish President are invited to wear it both during the day event and the ceremonial evening event. Instructions to wear honorary decorations: www.ritarikunnat.fi

  • Male guests can wear a formal ceremonial suit, such as a clerical ceremonial vestment or an armed forces uniform, in alternative to the tailcoat.

  • National folklore costumes are not to be intended as alternatives to the tailcoat/ evening gown.

  • Male guests shuld remember wristwatches do not suit tailcoats during the evening; a pocket watch with golden chain is allowed.

  • Female guests are not supposed to wear fur, jewellery and any ostentatious accessory during the day event. Jewellery and wristwatches are appropriate during the ceremonial evening event.

Hat makers and price quotes

When ordering the hat, please make sure it is a doctoral hat for the Aalto University Schools of Technology. It is also possible to borrow a hat for the ceremony. In such a case, the hat should be that of a Doctor of Science in Technology, it should look new and be the right size.

N.B. There are several conferments of degrees in Finland during the spring of 2019. Therefore, you should try to order your hat as early as possible. The estimated time for manufacturing and delivering the doctoral hats is 4-10 weeks.
