Aalto Science Institute

The Aalto Science Institute (AScI) is a strategic initiative hosted by the Aalto University School of Science to advance and foster international collaboration and research at the highest level across the fields of science. The key dimensions of the AScI initiative are quality, internationalisation, and collaboration. AScI supports the renewal of research excellence in Aalto by providing a platform and instruments for exploring new interdisciplinary research directions with breakthrough potential.

Visiting Scientist Programmes

AScI manages the application processes of two active funding instruments to bring international academics to Aalto School of Science: the Visiting Professor programme (on behalf of the Dean of the School of Science), and the AScI Visiting Researcher programme.

The Aalto Science Institute internship programme offers foreign undergraduate students employment opportunities to participate first-hand in topical research, to interact with the premier research groups at Aalto University, and to network in an international environment. The call for summer 2020 closed on January 17. All applicants will be informed of the decision at the latest by Feb 28.

Scientific meetings

AScI is soliciting proposals for organizing small-scale scientific meetings. For this purpose, AScI offers funding of up to 10 000 € per meeting.

Thematic Research Programmes

AScI invited proposals by the School of Science faculty and staff for thematic research programmes (TRP) in collaboraton with researchers from other Aalto schools.  The idea of the thematic programmes is to identify upcoming novel fields or topic areas of research not currently well represented in the School of Science or Aalto University, and to allow investment in the exploration and development of new research fields based on the existing strengths.

There are 8 TRPs that are active, or were completed in the academic year 2019-2020

  • Diffusion driven charge transport (DDCT) - Markku Sopanen(MNT/ELEC) and Jukka Tulkki(NBE/SCI)
  • Three dimensional computational methods in electromagnetics (CEM3D) - Anouar Belahcen (ELEC) and Antti Hannukainen (SCI)
  • Characterisation of superhydrophobic surfaces (CHESS) - Robin H. A. Ras (SCI) and Quan Zhou (ELEC)
  • Future structural materials for extreme conditions: High-Entropy Alloys (TRP-HEA) - Mari Lundström, Ben Wilson (CMET/CHEM), and Filip Tuomisto and Ilja Makkonen (DAP/SCI)
  • 3D User Interfaces in Materials Modelling Research and Education (3DMM) - Antti Karttunen (CHEM), Perttu Hämäläinen (SCI/ARTS), and Jaakko Lehtinen (SCI)
  • Nanochromic - Mady Elbahri (CHEM) and Matti Kaivola (SCI)
  • Advanced analytics for planning future energy systems (PlanFES) - Fabricio Oliveira (SCI) and Sanna Syri (ENG)
  • Penguin-inspired active surfaces (PENGUIN) - Heikki Nieminen, Robin Ras (SCI), Ville Vuorinen (ENG)
