The Menengai community in Kenya is embarking on a transformation journey through sustainable beekeeping. This practice provides an alternative source of income while helping to protect the area's unique crater forest. However, local beekeepers face a range of challenges from environmental threats to business development and knowledge sharing.
Aalto Global Impact - Connecting the Aalto and Menengai communities project, led by six International Design Business Management (IDBM) students from Aalto University in collaboration with Menengai community members, Egerton University (Kenya), and ESAD University (Portugal), supports the beekeepers through a participatory, multi-directional approach. The focus is on promoting sustainable use of local materials, facilitating community-based information exchange, and enhancing visibility through a shared documentation website.
To foster mutual learning, the project also aims to build a communication bridge between Aalto and Menengai. The group will organize informal gatherings at Aalto to share experiences in beekeeping and create connections to the Kenyan context. By exchanging practices and insights, both communities can benefit from each other's knowledge. In addition, we plan to explore clay-based hive construction and launch a website to support marketing and storytelling around the project.
