Contact [email protected] as early as possible if you have problems with your graduation plans or you are not able to receive your degree certificate within the time required by administrative processes.
Orientation for new students
Participating in orientation is an important part of starting studies at Aalto. During the orientation, you become familiar with studying and student life, your courses, your study environment and university practices. You also receive information about services available to you and get to know your fellow students, tutors, staff, and faculty.
Attending the orientation events and activities is highly recommended for all new students. However, if you are unable to attend, please inform your planning officer and read the information provided on these pages.
Pre-orientation
Pre-orientation is digital orientation material common to all new students of Aalto University. The actual orientation week programme is based on the assumption that all students have completed the pre-orientation. The pre-orientation is available in August for enrolled students who have activated their Aalto user account.
Complete the pre-orientation during the orientation week at the latest!

If I complete some extra courses at Aalto, will they be counted in the degree certificate?
The scope of the degree is 120 ECTS. Anything above 120 ECTS that can be excluded (e.g. is not a compulsory course at Aalto, or a course of the partner university) will be excluded from the degree. The agreement on which courses will be included in your degree is called a personal study plan, or HOPS. The personal study plan (HOPS) is based on the programme curriculum. You create a personal study plan (HOPS) in the beginning of your studies, but you can update it at any time during your studies. More information on page Planning your studies. Courses not included in your approved personal study plan (HOPS) are not included in your degree and will not appear on the degree certificate. They remain in the study register, and after graduation you can get a separate transcript which shows them.
Is there any deposit I need to pay for student residence or apartments in the private market?
Usually yes, but watch out for rental scams. Although renting from private landlords in Finland is usually safe, keep in mind the possibility of a hoax. If the apartment sounds too good to be true (cheap and central/good location), it can be a hoax. Do not send any money or credit card info etc. before you have seen the place and met the landlord and/or signed a contract. This does not apply to trustworthy organizations such as AYY or HOAS. More information on page Housing for students.
How do I join Athene guild, if I have already paid the AYY fee and enrolled?
Instructions on how to join Athene: https://athene.fi/en/international/joining-the-guild/
Can I change guilds after I have joined a guild?
You cannot directly change guilds, but you can join as many guilds as you wish. You can ask the guild you already joined if your payment can be reimbursed. You can find the contact information on the guild's web page.
HSL travel discount
Double degree students who reside in Finland for less than two years and who are not entitled to the regular student discount in HSL public transportation, can get the same discount as exchange students. The discount percentage and benefits are the same, but the basis of granting the discount is different. Read more on HSL website.
In order to get the discount, you need an original, stamped and signed form filled in by the university. Collect this form in person from the Service point of School of Science. See the opening hours on the Contact page.
Remember to ask for the form for exchange students when you visit the Service point!
