Student Guide
Congratulations for the admission and welcome to study at the Aalto University School of Business! On this page you will find instructions for starting your studies and the orientation programme.
Prepare for your Bachelor’s studies:
Participating in orientation is an important part of starting your university studies. During the orientation you will familiarize yourself with studying and student life, your courses, study environment and university practices. You will also receive information about services available to you and get to know your fellow students, tutors, staff and faculty.
Most of the programme is intended for all new students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Business (kauppatieteiden kandidaattiohjelma). Students admitted on the basis of Open University studies or a transfer application procedure will have their own online info session in mid-August. A part of the orientation week programme is not intended for students admitted through the above-mentioned routes, while some are specifically for them. If you have been admitted through either of these routes, follow the programme under Students admitted on the basis of Open University studies or a transfer application procedure.
Changes may be made to the orientation week programme, so watch this space.
You can find the orientation week program by changing the language to Finnish at the top of the page.
You can find the orientation week program by changing the language to Finnish at the top of the page.
All new students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Business will be divided into tutoring groups. Each group will have 5 to 6 students and a student tutor. Your tutor will contact you in the autumn using the contact details you gave when you applied to the programme.
Student tutors are there to introduce the new students to the Aalto University student life, offer peer support and help new students find their place in the student community. Tutors are volunteers trained for this task by the Aalto University Student Union (AYY), the Aalto University Business Students (KY) and the School of Business. You can ask your tutor anything you would like to know about studies and student life in general.
Study tutors work at the Learning Services of the School of Business and are responsible for advising the first-year students. Study tutors are there for you to help with any study-related questions, such as planning your studies. Study tutors are also in charge of the Onboarding course that lasts for the whole of the first year of studies.
You can reach the study tutors even before the orientation week by emailing to opintotutor-biz(at)aalto.fi and you will meet them during the orientation week at the latest.
If you have previously studied at another university or Finnish university of applied sciences and completed studies that correspond to courses given in the Bachelor's Programme in Business, you can apply for their credits to be transferred towards your Aalto degree.
As a rule, courses completed at Aalto University or the Aalto University Open University do not need to be transferred through an application procedure. Instead, they can be directly added to your study plan on Sisu. See here for instructions.
If you were admitted in a transfer application procedure, all the studies that made you eligible for the transfer will be counted towards your Aalto degree without a separate application.
If you wish to transfer credits towards courses taught in the autumn term, you should apply no later than 20 August 2023, and sooner if possible. For courses organised in the spring term, apply for credit transfer during Period I.
When you apply for credit transfer towards the autumn courses no later than 20 August 2023, you will get a decision on credit transfer before your studies at Aalto begin. This means that you will know which courses you received transfer credits for and which courses you need to register for at Aalto.
Before you have chosen your major, you can only apply for credit transfer towards the Fundamentals of Business Knowledge course and compulsory language courses. You can apply for credit transfer for other courses after you have chosen your major.
You have to compare the course you have completed elsewhere and the course that is part of your programme here at Aalto with regards to learning goals, contents and extent and estimate, if they are aquivalent. You can only apply for credit transfer after completing the course elsewhere, not before.
Read the credit transfer policy carefully and submit your application only after you have added all the required appendices to it; your application will not be considered without the transcript of records and relevant course descriptions.
The instructions for credit transfer have more information about what is assessed in a credit transfer application and what attachments you need.
You can apply for credit transfer in the Sisu student information system and its personal study plan (HOPS) function. The technical instructions can be found here.
Read the instructions for credit transfer carefully and only send the application once you have all the required attachments. Your application can't be processed without a transcript of records and course description.
If you receive transfer credits towards compulsory first-year courses, it pays to fill in the gaps in your study schedule with language courses or courses of a major or minor that interests you.
Any studies you have completed before your right to study entered into force will not be considered when choosing students to a given major. This means that any courses you have completed before your right to study in the Bachelor's Programme in Business entered into force will not be considered when making decisions on majors. This applies to any courses taken at Aalto, the Aalto University Open University or elsewhere.
