Staff Scientist in Microscale Biomechanics

Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a Staff Scientist in the field of Microscale Biomechanics, including biomechanical measurements in 3D cultures, mechanical effects on cell differentiation and migration as well as remodeling of the extra cellular matrix.

Research environment

Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation houses several research groups studying various aspects of health-related technologies and nanomaterials. The staff scientist to be recruited will focus on microscale biomechanics, area that is located between living and man-made materials. The position will be placed in the Microsystems Technologies group led by prof. Tomi Laurila.

Your role and goals

The staff scientist position is for an academic staff member who is a specialist in research work connected to the microscale biomechanics.

The primary responsibilities of the staff scientist will include:

  • Performing demanding research in microscale biomechanics

  • Managing and planning research equipment and infrastructure related to microscale biomechanics, such as cell culturing facilities

  • Preparation and management of research projects

  • Supervision of research, including M.Sc. and doctoral theses

The expected distribution of work among various duties is 50% research, 20% teaching, and 30% service.

Your experience and ambitions

We seek candidates that:

  • have a doctoral degree in a relevant field

  • have demonstrated evidence of successful research work shown by a strong scientific publication record

  • have research experience in microscale biomechanics, cell material interactions and related topics.

  • are motivated in networking and research collaboration with other research groups, nationally and internationally

Additional merits that are considered include:

  • Previous experience with similar equipment used by the research group

  • International experience especially in US and Europe

  • Experience in project management or other duties at the group/department/university level

  • A track record of acquiring competitive funding

Salary and contract terms

The Staff Scientist position will be filled permanently. The starting salary will be set according to department guidelines depending on experience and qualifications. The contract includes occupational health care and social security benefits. The planned starting date is in August 2024 but can be negotiated.
