ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR POSITION IN STRUCTURAL AND ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING

In total, the number of personnel is about 115. The department and school have well-equipped research infra and access to national scientific computing services. We are located at Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo where several research institutions and organizations have their laboratories.

Job description

The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in Structural and Architectural Engineering. This new position is part of one of Aalto University's key research areas, known as "Human Centered Living Environments."

We are seeking a talented candidate who can provide research and teaching contributions at the intersection of structural engineering and architecture. We particularly invite applications from candidates with expertise in both structural and architectural design. You will strengthen and complement the research and education within the research focus area of “Structural engineering, mechanics, and computation”. The candidate is expected to perform multidisciplinary research collaborations within the Department of Civil Engineering and other departments. The new position is also established to develop and strengthen the collaboration with the Department of Architecture.

All the professors at Aalto University are expected to perform high quality research and teaching, and to supervise on the doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. We expect professors to be active members of Aalto University and the international scientific community, and to exhibit leadership and services for society.

Requirements

The applicants must have a doctoral degree relevant to the position. For applicants with a focus on architecture, we expect additional education or specialization in structural engineering, preferably an additional academic degree. For applicants with a focus on structural engineering, we expect design-oriented expertise in architectural projects and competitions. All applicants should highlight the education and expertise in both areas in their application. The applicant should have technical and methodological skills of computational methods applied in parametric structural design and/or robotic fabrication. Well demonstrated collaboration skills and a fluent command in English are essential.

Experience in acquiring funding for research projects, preferably also academic competitive funding, multidisciplinary research approach, and relevant practical experience are considered as advantages.

The merits and potential of the applicants will be appraised via a holistic evaluation based on the quality and quantity of research, teaching, and practical expertise in addition to the overall activity in the scientific community and society. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted for supporting the evaluation of research merits.

When recruiting for the first term assistant professor position, the evaluation is mainly based on the potential of the candidate in the evaluated dimensions. When appointing the second term assistant professors, the evaluation is based on demonstrated merits and potential. When appointing an associate professor, the candidates must have high academic merits, be of top rank among the distinguished members of their discipline and must show a continued contribution to academic research.
