Director, Aalto University Design Factory

We are now seeking an inspiring and collaborative Director for Aalto University Design Factory.

In this role, you will be leading the activities of Aalto University Design Factory – both day-to-day operations as well as the long-term development of the unit, taking Aalto Design Factory to the next level. You will be collaborating with the Aalto community, startups, industry, and the global network of Design Factories. Rooted in product development, Design Factory endeavors to facilitate interdisciplinary education, research, and practical application, building a new kind of challenge- and passion-based learning culture.

You will be responsible for:

  • leading and managing the unit’s operations with clear strategy and vision, well communicated goals and active collaboration and dialogue.
  • providing team leadership and ensuring commitment and wellbeing in the unit.
  • leading and developing the collaboration across Aalto community.
  • cultivating the Design Factory global network.
  • maintaining and enhancing the facilities and workshops.
  • contributing actively to supporting Aalto University and its schools in challenge-based learning and educational experimentation.

The new Director will serve as a role model through hands-on, grassroot level of active participation in teaching and experimentation. You will directly engage with students, Aalto programs and faculty, industry partners, and the global network. You will be leading an organisation of 30 employees, and report to the Dean of the School of Engineering.

This is a full-time position, for a period of 5 years.

We are looking for a leader, with

  • demonstrated experience in leading and inspiring people;
  • excellent skills in building collaboration in a matrix organization and across networks and stakeholders;
  • relevant experience in the university context;
  • evidence on teaching development and teaching experience of product development and innovation;
  • evidence of successful application to funding and leadership of multiorganization project consortiums;
  • relevant experience in management of infrastructure for teaching and innovation;
  • excellent people skills with a positive hands-on approach;
  • collaborative, solution oriented and innovative working style;
  • doctoral degree;
  • excellent proficiency in English. Knowledge of Finnish and Swedish is a merit.

Aalto University Design Factory is an interdisciplinary product design and learning hub uniting students, teachers, researchers, and industry. Rooted in product development, DF endeavors to facilitate interdisciplinary education, research, and practical application. We aim to build a new kind of passion-based learning culture for Aalto University.

Design Factory serves all Aalto University schools by providing an experimental co-creation platform for interdisciplinary learning.
