Revision on Professor of Practice -titles
The target of the revision was to clarify the use of the title Professor of Practice both in internal and external communication. Before the revision there were two kinds of Professor of Practice -positions at Aalto 1) about 20 Professor of Practice -positions allocated by the President in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and 2) about 30 Professor of Practice -positions allocated by the Deans.
Professor (Artistic Practices), Professor (Design Practices) and Professor (Architectural Practices)
These positions are intended for the fields of art, design, and architecture. They provide the departments with the possibility to hire highly qualified professionals to open new areas of teaching and research and/or artistic work, and re-evaluate and dynamically develop a field. The titles for professor of practice positions allocated by the president to Aalto ARTS will be changed to Professor (Artistic Practices), Professor (Design Practices) and Professor (Architectural Practices) as per 1 January, 2017. The position is considered a professor position with Aalto-level requirements (and school specific criteria) and external evaluation. The recruitment process is the same used in tenure track recruitments.
Professor of Practice
The Professor of Practice title acts as a mechanism through which practical expertise and societal knowledge transfers to the university community. The position provides an opportunity to engage qualified, business or public sector leaders and experts with academic background to Aalto University for special purposes. The emphasis in the work profile is teaching. The Dean is responsible for specifying the requirements for Professor of Practice positions. There will be no changes to schools’ Professor of Practice titles in this revision.
