New opportunities for doctoral students: Universities agreed on national co-operation in doctoral education
Finnish universities are strengthening their cooperation in doctoral education by providing more opportunities for doctoral students to expand their expertise. Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics, University of Eastern Finland, University of Helsinki, University of Lapland, University of the Arts Helsinki, University of Turku and Åbo Akademi have signed an agreement, which allows doctoral students to complete doctoral level courses in different universities.
With the flexible study right, doctoral students can apply for temporary study rights for courses organised by other universities. The courses must be included these in their doctoral degree and their supervising professor must approve the studies. The flexible study right provides an opportunity to participate in specialised courses that are relevant for the students' doctoral research, which may not be available at their home university. At the same time, the agreement supports individual study paths for doctoral students and strengthens their expertise.
The studies are free of charge for doctoral students. No fees are charged between universities.
The agreement came into effect on 1 September 2025.
