EIT Funds – Bringing great ideas to life - Info Event in Otaniemi 13 Dec 2017

Aalto University’s newly founded EIT Services Team started its work to support Aalto researchers, teachers, entrepreneurs and students to benefit from funding options offered by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (European Institute for Innovation and Technology, EIT).

Funding options can be utilized to help researchers get great ideas off the ground and take them to market. Other EIT funding instruments address Educational objectives. For instance funding for Masters’ program and Doctoral level education are geared towards creating tomorrow’s game-changers and T-shaped entrepreneurs.

The EIT Service Team at Aalto University works in close collaboration with the nominated academic leaders (https://inside.aalto.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=50251176) to provide essential, relevant and current information to the Aalto community.

The EIT is an independent body of the European Union set up in 2008 to spur innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe. The EIT brings together Universities, Research Institutes and Industrial Players to form Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) with the primary task of overcoming some of the greatest challenge of our society such as climate change, energy and raw materials usage, healthy nutrition, digitalization etc. Currently six KICs are working to tackle these diverse issues. Aalto University is a partner in three EIT KICs:

-          Climate-KIC: focuses on challenges related to climate change

-          EIT Digital: creates world-class digital innovation

-          EIT RawMaterials: secures cost efficient, sustainable supply of raw materials.

In addition, Aalto University is a project partner in a fourth KIC:

-          InnoEnergy: aims to be the leading engine in sustainable energy.

Aalto EIT Service Team is led by Marja-Leena Markkula. The team comprises of Päivi Saarinen (Controller) and three project managers for each of the KICs in which Aalto University is a partner. Petri Allekotte is dedicated to Climate-KIC, Ingrid Schembri to EIT Digital and Zoltan Javor to EIT RawMaterials. Each project manager is supported by an academic professor who is the appointed Academic Leader of the KICs.

The EIT Services Team invites you to learn more about the EIT, the KICs in which Aalto University is a partner and the benefits KIC membership brings to the Aalto community. Come and meet the EIT Services Team at Open Innovation House on Wednesday 13th December 08:30-11:30.

A Flexible Biorefinery using Machine Learning

Biorefineries convert biomass, such as wood, annual plants or agricultural into products and energy. Research teams in Finland and Germany aim to maximize such product output for a more holistic valorization of our natural resources. The development of these new processes is often slow because they require optimization of many factors. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) can help us accelerate such a development drastically.
