Courses for doctoral students in period IV (2024-2025)

The registration for the courses happens in Sisu and usually starts one month before. Registration period per course usually ends either one week before or one week after the start of the course, depending on the type of the course. Period IV runs from 24 February to 13 April 2025.

Writing doctoral research

LC-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Engineering and Science 24.2.-9.4.2025

This course aims to help doctoral students to develop their academic writing skills while writing up their research. Therefore, participants need to be in the process of writing either an article for publication or their dissertation. Students’ own texts form a key part of the course as they work to improve them. The overall aim of the course is to enable participants to write up their research more effectively and with greater confidence for an international readership. Registration for the period 4 group is open in Sisu until February 19. Another group will be offered in period 5.

Presenting doctoral research

LC-1331 Presenting Doctoral Research 24.2.-9.4.2025

This is a course aimed at supporting doctoral students (from any Aalto school) in developing skills in presenting their research. The course is intended for participants who will be presenting soon either at a conference or in a seminar. Students’ own presentations form a key part of the course. During the course, students plan, structure, and visualize their presentations and then practice giving them. The practice sessions include giving a rehearsal presentation, upon which feedback is given and then implemented before giving a final presentation. Participants also practice strategies for asking, receiving, and deflecting questions from the audience. Registration is open in Sisu until February 19. Another group will be offered in period 5.

LC-0510 Conference presentations (this group in English) 26.2.-12.3.2025  

How can you present your research in a clear and engaging way? And how can you channel nervousness into an energy boost during your talk? This course focuses specifically on conference presentations, where you'll have the opportunity to refine your presentation in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. 

Communication and interaction

 "A great team is more than the sum of its parts" – but what does this really mean in practice? In this hands-on course, you will develop your skills in team and group communication. Learn practical strategies to enhance collaboration, improve interaction, and understand how effective communication builds successful and efficient teams.  

LC-0320 Public speaking skills (this group in English) 24.2.-7.4.2025  

Refine your presentation skills on this in-depth presentation skills training. Lots of public speaking exercises from improv to academic presentations and pitching and podcasts. 

LC-0550 Communication skills (this group in Finnish) 25.2.-3.4.2025  

A comprehensive basic course in communication skills. This practical course will help you deepen your understanding of various communication situations and provide practical tools for handling them. Building and maintaining relationships is an essential skill for both work and life! 

LC-0330 Leadership Communication (this group in Finnish) 26.2.-2.4.2025  

Join this course exploring leadership from a communication perspective and develop your interaction skills! Key topics include a leader's communication competence, leader-subordinate relationships, feedback skills, active listening, and remote leadership. 
 

For new doctoral students

LC-1333 Navigate your doctoral studies while learning about equity, diversity and inclusion 27.2.-3.4.2025

This course is intended to new doctoral students who are at the beginning of their doctoral journey. The course is constructed in workshop meetings, each of which with its own theme. The participants are actors and bring content to these meetings which address varying topics, e.g., expectations and study structure, potential challenges in the doctoral path, useful means to overcome obstacles, language and inclusion. The aim of the course is for the new doctoral students to network and find solutions even before the potential problems arise. The six workshops are held during Period 4 and registration is open in Sisu until February 20.
