Courses for doctoral students in period III (2025-2026)

The registration for the courses happens in Sisu and usually starts one month before. Registration period per course usually ends either one week before or one week after the start of the course, depending on the type of the course. Period III runs from 5 January to 22 February 2026.

Research writing

During the practical Writing Doctoral Research courses, students work to improve their own writing in progress as they apply skills and techniques introduced in the course. The course content will include aspects of writing, such as

- Internal organisation of a text, including sequencing of information, paragraph writing and sentence structures
- Appropriateness to the reader (i.e. the target audience), including text structure, sentence and paragraph length, and vocabulary choice
- Clarity of the message (information organisation, referencing, and cohesiveness)
- Writing effective sentences, paragraphs and sections (such as abstracts, introductions, and conclusions)
- Argumentation and researcher positioning/stance
- Editing for accuracy

LCB-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Business and Management 12.1-11.2.2026

This group is primarily for students from the School of Business.  If there is space on the course, students from CHEM, ELEC, ENG and SCI are also welcome to join! Their final course grades can be given under the course code LC-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Engineering and Science.

Defence

LC-1335 Preparing for the doctoral defence 13.1.-13.2.2026

Are you preparing to defend your doctoral thesis? Then this is the course for you! 

This course aims to support and develop doctoral students’ skills in presenting and defending their research.  During the course, participants plan and structure their Lectio Praecursoria and practice defending their research and written work in small groups. Students will be introduced to different coping strategies for anticipating questions and responding in an assertive, professional manner. Students will also give and receive feedback on their visuals, content and language use.

LC-7240 Tekniikan alan suomi 4 -kurssi 12.1.-18.3.2026

Mitä?

Tekniikan alan suomi 4 is a language course offered as part of thepartially EU-funded Tekniikan alan suomi project, conducted in the Aalto Bachelor of Science and Technology program in years 2025-2027.

The course focuses on the theme of job search and working life. In addition to general language skills, the course will cover the following topics: my work history, job interview, written communication at the workplace, networking, and chit chat about technology.

Kuka?

  • Prerequisite: Suomi 1, 2 and 3 at the Aalto Language Centre, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Priority in enrollment will be given to students in the Bachelor of Science and Technology program. Master’s students, doctoral researchers and Aalto faculty and staff in technology can also join!

We will offer two implementations of LC-7240 Tekniikan alan suomi 4:

  • Opettaja Verna Pelkonen: ma ja ke klo 12.30–14.00, 12.1.-18.3.2026

LC-1333 Navigating your doctoral studies while learning about equity, diversity and inclusion 26.2.-9.4.2026

This course is intended to new doctoral students who are at the beginning of their doctoral journey. The course is constructed in workshop meetings, each of which with its own theme. The participants are actors and bring content to these meetings which address varying topics, e.g., expectations and study structure, potential challenges in the doctoral path, useful means to overcome obstacles, language and inclusion. The aim of the course is for the new doctoral students to network and find solutions even before the potential problems arise. The six workshops are held during Period 4 and registration is open in Sisu until February 20.
