Carbon Neutral Aalto 2030 action plan launches

Aalto University aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Aalto University is launching a Carbon Neutral Aalto 2030 action plan, in order to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2030.  

’Sustainability is at the core of Aalto University’s new strategy and a cross-cutting principle across our operations. The aim of the Carbon Neutral Aalto 2030 action plan is to examine all of our operations and to develop practices for decreasing carbon dioxide emissions’, says Vice President Ossi Naukkarinen.

Campus real estate operations and technology have a significant impact on how emissions can be reduced. The Carbon Neutral Otaniemi roadmap provides guidelines for energy efficiency and for utilizing renewable energy sources, for example. The roadmap also covers construction, building maintenance, water and waste management, circular economy, as well as research and IT environments.

Travel and commuting are also central to the Carbon Neutral Aalto 2030 action plan, which also emphasizes remote work possibilities and sustainable travel options on campus, including electric travel solutions. The action plan also includes food/catering services and procurement.    

The Carbon Neutral Aalto 2030 action plan is implemented in collaboration with employees, students and other stakeholders. Implementation of the action plan is monitored regularly as part of the University’s annual planning, as well as by the Aalto University Board and in reporting to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
