Aalto Learning Awards 2017 presented to Professor Petri Vuorimaa and student representatives in Aalto administration

Vuorimaa was presented an award for being a role model and the ‘halloped’ student representatives for achievement in community development in the Learning@Aalto gala, a gala organised for the whole Aalto community.

Professor Petri Vuorimaa acknowledged as a role model

The Aalto Learning Award 2017 for ‘Role Model in Learning’ was acknowledged to Professor Petri Vuorimaa, director of the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences (CCIS).

In 2014, Petri took the lead in starting preparations for a joint master’s programme for Aalto SCI and Aalto ELEC. This venture combined the programme of computer science and engineering with that of communications engineering into a single master’s programme, thus bringing the whole ICT field under a single roof. With almost 600 students, the CCIS programme, successfully directed by Vuorimaa, is the largest degree programme of the university.

Petri Vuorimaa has also made a significant contribution to the Aalto strategic development action, Programme Attractiveness, which he currently leads. He is also responsible for Aalto University’s share in a programme offered at the EIT Digital Master School of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. In addition to the duties above, Petri has taken the time to promote the employment and master’s thesis project opportunities of international students, a goal towards which he works actively in collaboration with Aalto’s business partners and members of the Aalto community.

Aalto hallopeds receive Community Development Award

The Community Development Award is acknowledged to Student Union hallopeds in recognition of achievement in promoting learning and student wellbeing.

This year, the award goes to the student representatives in the Aalto administration, also known as ‘the hallopeds’, who are the liaison between students, teachers and learning services. The hallopeds are students who are committed to community development and conversant with their duties. The active voluntary work of the hallopeds has had a major effect on the development of the Aalto learning community and the quality of Aalto’s education.

It is partly owing to hallopeds’ feedback and the measures taken in response that have made it possible for the Aalto quality system for bachelor’s and master’s education to receive the highest possible grade in the external evaluation of education.

Furthermore, the hallopeds play a key role in the AllWell? student wellbeing project.

The award was received on behalf of the hallopeds by Susanna Koistinen, Suvi Vendelin, Tapio Hautamäki and Hilja Korhonen.
