NOTE: The courses offered by the Department of Film are piloting semester-based course registration.
For the academic year 2025-2026, the registration periods for courses in the Department of Film are as follows:
For the autumn semester (periods 1 and 2), registration is open from Mon 28th July to Mon 18th August.
For the spring semester (periods 3 to 5), registration is open from Mon 17th November to Mon 8th December.
If you did not notice the different registration period for courses in periods 1 and 2 in Sisu, please contact the student services at studentservices@aalto.fi.
Minor students are required to have prior knowledge of the audiovisual field or education in production or another field (for example, through education in another major or professional experience). Participation in teaching generally requires fluency in Finnish and English. The application must include a motivation letter that also outlines the applicant's earlier experience.

Description of the minor
The minor consists of four courses with a total workload of 18 ECTS credits.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the minor, the student will:
- Understand the history, terminology, and various workflows of effects in 2D and 3D environments.
- Be able to observe and analyze moving images from the perspective of effects and select appropriate methods to implement effects for different types of images.
- Be able to composite images from multiple sources into believable, cohesive compositions.
- Recognize the impact of VFX work on schedules and budgets.
Structure of the minor
The minor covers the history, theory, and practice of effects. The minor consists of four courses (3 credits + 3 credits + 6 credits + 6 credits). The total scope of the minor is 18 credits. The courses are organized as intensive teaching sessions from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, during the course weeks.
At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.
