About the minor
Target group: All students of Aalto University with sufficient prerequisite knowledge. The Statistics minor is aimed for students who do not have Mathematics and Systems Sciences as their major.
Name of the minor in other languages: Tilastotiede, Statistik
As more and more data are collected, stored and analyzed, knowledge of statistical methods has become increasingly important in many disciplines. Understanding statistics is useful for research in many areas including engineering, business, and education as well as in many jobs in industry and public administration.
The minor in statistics is designed to provide students with an introduction to both -- statistical theory and practice. The students will learn to collect and describe data, to conduct statistical analyses and to interpret the results. Additionally, the students will learn to perform computer-based analyses and the theory behind the used methods.
Content
The students agree on the content of the minor (20-25 cr) with Professor Pauliina Ilmonen. The minor can include, for example, the following courses:
| Code | Course name | ECTS | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS-C1620 | Statistical Inference | 5 | III-IV |
| MS-C2111 | Stochastic Processes | 5 | II |
| MS-C2128 | Prediction and Time Series Analysis | 5 | II |
| MS-E2112 | Multivariate Statistical Analysis D | 5 | III-IV |
Additional special courses in the field of the minor are taught in English under the course codes MS-EVxxxx and MS-CVxxxx. These and other courses supporting studies in statistics can also be included in the minor.
