The international minor consists entirely or mainly of studies completed at a foreign university during student exchange. The studies need to be suitable for the Bachelor's Programme in Engineering degree. The minor not only enhances cognitive skills but also fosters cross-cultural understanding, interaction, language skills, and adds an international dimension to the professional profile.

The scope of the international minor is 20-25 ECTS credits and it forms a minor for the degree. The international minor may include courses completed during exchange that do not overlap with the student’s own major, as well as language and culture studies of the host country. At least 15 ECTS credits must be professional courses, and up to 10 ECTS credits may be language and cultural studies of the host country. When selecting professional courses, an effort should be made to create a coherent set, i.e., courses are recommended to be chosen from the same field. The content of the international minor should be negotiated and agreed upon when making the study plan for the exchange period (following the principles of student exchange) with the student's major subject's study coordinator and the responsible professor.

It is possible to complement the international minor with studies at Aalto University, such as courses offered by the Language Centre or with credits earned from tutoring international students.

The international minor can (under certain conditions) also be completed virtually. This enables “internationalisation at home,” i.e., developing international and intercultural competence at the home university. The virtual option is accessible, as physical mobility abroad is not possible for all students. A virtual international minor requires that Aalto University has agreed on the study package with a strategic partner university or an international university alliance (N5T, Unite!). In a virtual international minor, in addition to professional subject studies, there must be an element that develops intercultural competence (e.g., by including interaction between students from different universities).

The international minor will be graded as pass/fail.

Intended learning outcomes:

In addition to professional skills achieved from the exchange studies, the student will

• learn to study in a foreign academic environment

• gain a different perspective to the field of studies

• learn and improve foreign language skills

• learn intercultural communication and different perspectives

• learn to live with and tolerate uncertainty

• learn cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity

• enhance networking skills in a new and international environment
