Quotas and restrictions:

The maximum number of students admitted per study year is fifteen (15) students. The distribution of places is as follows: ELO's own students (12), other students (3).

Application instructions for Aalto University students

NOTE: The courses offered by the Department of Film are piloting semester-based course registration.

For the academic year 2025-2026, the registration periods for courses in the Department of Film are as follows:

For the autumn semester (periods 1 and 2), registration is open from Mon 28th July to Mon 18th August.
For the spring semester (periods 3 to 5), registration is open from Mon 17th November to Mon 8th December.

If you did not notice the different registration period for courses in periods 1 and 2 in Sisu, please contact the student services at studentservices@aalto.fi.

The student must submit a motivation letter, a preliminary plan for their minor studies and 1-2 examples of their artistic or research work. Examples of the work will be submitted in digital form together with the other application documents.

Selection criteria: motivation of the applicant and level of artistic or research work.

Target group: For bachelor students, ELO and Aalto ARTS students, University of the Arts Students, all students of Aalto University.

Content

The minor consists of courses in documentary film, screenwriting, film editing, cinematography, film directing, film and television production, film sound recording and production design. The courses are selected from basic courses of these majors and may also include written sections. The content of the minor is tailored to each student during a separate discussion with the responsible teacher. The student chooses an entity that suits their learning goals (18-24 cr) from the courses on offer. The course content is designed individually according to the student's needs, previous studies and competence.

Learning outcomes

The student deepens and completes the understanding of their major through the minor. The student learns the basic concepts of dramaturgy and begins to apply dramaturgy in the audiovisual narration of different aspects of film. The student learns to analyze and use different audiovisual styles and narrative methods in film and television.

Minor structure

The structure of the minor is designed individually according to the student's needs, previous studies and competence, and the annual course selection.
