Building design studio 2, 2018 — The Art of Heat: Architecture and fashion controlling temperature
Introduction
Autumn 2018
Architecture and clothing design both have the same function: to control the heat of the human body.
Without this protective mechanism, we would all die.
Aalto University Department of Architecture presented:
- ARK-E2005 Changing Topic in Building Design, 10 sp (for the students of interior design or fashion design)
- ARK-E2003 Building Design Studio 2, 10 sp (for architecture students)
It was a design course for master level students: five in architecture, five in interior design, and five in fashion design, divided into three student groups.
Periods I-II 14/09/2018 - 14/12/2018, teaching on Fridays 13:15-17, location: Väre J301 & J302 (level three, module J).
Contact teaching per student: 42h (including four seminars: course introduction, two intermediate critiques, and final critique, each 3h and obligatory to all) + group work 225h.
The course was a collaboration with Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation (SCF), at Donghua University, where there was a parallel formal study course (Visual Merchandising, 3rd year Interior Design undergraduate students).
The task was to design a shop for a fashion company in China, including possibly other spaces, such as a small coffee spot, a small event space, a small library, or other functions suitable for the concept. The company was called Deepmoss.
The course included a workshop with the Donghua students in Shanghai on September 16th-21st, 2018. Each student received flight tickets bought by the university. Accommodation and other travel costs had to be paid by the students themselves. By being accepted to the course, a student made a binding reservation for this trip. In case of cancellation, the student paid the cancellation.
The fashion and architecture students worked together in order:
- to analyse contemporary tendencies and trends related to the task,
- to define an integrating creative concept to tie the fashion design and the architecture of the company together.
Individual phase:
- The architecture students designed a building with an emphasis on fashion-related aspects in the building and the company's activities, in addition to normal architectural design.
- The interior design students designed interiors, which design could be applied to several locations if needed.
- The fashion design students designed a new clothing range for the company, all based on the same integrated concept.
The students were selected according to their portfolios, which had to be sent to antti.ahlava@aalto.fi and pirjo.hirvonen@aalto.fi by Aug 30, 2018.
