Urban challenges festival – 17-18 Oct

This 2-day networking event for teachers and students aims to increase awareness of urban challenges in the Helsinki city region while sparking conversations around integrating them into challenge-based learning courses. Everyone with an interest in sustainability and challenge-based learning is welcome to attend! The use cases focus on built environments and circular economy.

Educators and students with extensive backgrounds in challenge-based learning, as well as the city of Helsinki, will share their experiences and recommendations for implementing these practices into educational contexts. Lunch and breakfast are included when you register.
Sustainability event

This series of events is aimed at educators and students who are interested in matchmaking and integrating urban challenges in organizations and education. Participants will hear about the different challenges in the Helsinki city region and will be introduced to various tools and methods for the co-creation of the solutions. The participants will hear about the use cases focused on built environments and circular economy and the experiences of students and teachers. 

Participants will be encouraged to create action plans on implementing sustainability challenge-based learning into their activities.

Schedule and program

Event Goals

  • Get the student perspective 

  • Create awareness and understanding of local city challenges
  • Increase understanding of the roles and responsibilities of regional stakeholders in addressing those challenges
  • Spark interest in uptaking the solution from the program

Additionally:

  • Increase understanding of the need for challenge-based learning to address SDGs
  • Extend understanding of the need for the involvement of various stakeholders in the process
  • Increase desire to replicate the training
  • Create matchmaking and upskilling opportunities, with the introduction of various tools and methods for co-creation of the solutions to urban challenges. 
  • Curate action plans for addressing the urban challenges in each city.

    Ronny Rantamäki

    Ronny is the Senior Advisor for the City of Helsinki Circular Economy Cluster Program, focusing on startups, growth companies, and university cooperation. He has several years of experience in business cluster development and sparring circular economy solutions for the public sector.

    Ronny has been an integral part of the Urban Goodcamp project this year; the City of Helsinki provided one of the student challenges regarding circular economy within the construction sector. The student results of this challenge will be showcased during the festival’s first day. 

    Ronny will give an intriguing presentation about the current urban challenges in Helsinki on 17 October.

    Sara Figueiredo

    Sara is an optimist chatterbox who sees design as an act to impact society positively. Her design approach tackles complex challenges through systemic strategies, experimenting, and innovating to create meaningful solutions that make a real difference. Sara is a doctoral researcher at Aalto Design Factory, advocating the fields of Product Development and Design Thinking. Her research interests revolve around problem-based learning, product-service systems, and radical innovation. She was a teaching assistant in the Product Development Project Course (PdP) for two academic years from 2021 onwards. She handled course practices by crafting methods to trigger collaborative work and helped student teams bring forth innovative products that impact the users and the real industry. Currently, she is the creative strategist of Design Factory Global Network (DFGN), a network of innovation hubs on a mission to create change in the world of learning and research.

    Sara will take part in the panel discussion on 17 October.

    Paul Wong

    Currently based in Finland, Paul is working on the commercialization of copper-based flow batteries that can be used in multiple grid and industrial-scale applications to accelerate the energy transition. Alongside his work, Paul is also pursuing an MSc in Creative Sustainability at the School of Business at Aalto University (Finland) with a focus on entrepreneurship. His past experiences in developing SMEs and startups overlap with his long-term goals of shaping a more sustainable and decarbonized future through business, civil society, and the public sector.

    Paul will showcase the student results from the Urban Goodcamp project, as well as participate in the panel discussion on 17 October.

    Natalia Villaman

    Natalia is a PhD researcher at the University of Helsinki, where she focuses on how to use facilitation to promote political participation. She is the Primary Coordinator of Aalto University's work package 5 'Pilot and Implementation' for the Erasmus+ project Urban Goodcamp. Additionally, she works at the Aalto University Summer School as a Programme Coordinator, taking care of curriculum development and teacher collaboration. 

    The second day of the event is based mostly on Natalia's work, and she will facilitate the panel discussion on 17 October.

    Elina Kähkönen

    Elina Kähkönen (Dr.Sci.(Tech)) is a university lecturer in interdisciplinary product development. She has been teaching in the Aaltonaut minor in which all courses are built on problem-based interdisciplinary teamwork. Currently, she is the head of a teaching development strategy project that aims at integrating cross-cutting themes of Aalto; Solutions for sustainability, Radical creativity, and Entrepreneurial mindset, in teaching.

    Elina will participate in the panel discussion on 17 October.

    Meri Kuikka

    Meri is a university teacher at Aalto Design Factory and she works toward creating future-proof learning in new business development and product design. Her interests include problem-based learning, pedagogy, multidisciplinarity, and entrepreneurship. 

    Meri will take part in the panel discussion on 17 October.

    Local partner organizations joining UCAMP

    Local organisations join Aalto University's Urban GoodCamp as project partners

    Five organisations from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area's public and private sector are joining the Erasmus+ Urban Goodcamp project, providing challenges and mentoring to the students participating in the programme. The project Urban GoodCamp aims to tackle pressing urban challenges through multidisciplinary programmes for students, researchers, and life-long learners.
