The Fine Line Between Ambition and Feasibility: Tips for Writing ERC Project Proposals

In this talk, I will outline my experience of how ERC panels look at an ERC grant. I will address questions such as: What do panelists typically look for in the candidate? What do they look for in the project vision? What do they expect in the research approach? I will emphasize the imperative of balancing research ambition and project feasibility, which is arguably the most delicate tradeoff that ERC project proposers need to strike. I will also discuss how a typical ERC grant looks like section-by-section and explain how panel members generally read each of these sections.

The talk starts at 10:00 (45 minutes + questions) at hall T1 in CS Building

Talk will be Professor Dumas will be available for one-on-one meetings at 12:00-13:30 in room A211, in case there are staff members who are preparing ERC starting grant proposals and who would like personalized advice. Slots for one-on-one meetings can be reserved after the talk.

Bio:

Marlon Dumas is Professor of Information Systems at University of Tartu. He is chair of the Starting Grants panel for Computer Science and Informatics (2018) at the European Research Council. In the past, he has been faculty member at Queensland University of Technology, Australia and Visiting Researcher at SAP Research, Australia. His research interests span across the fields of software engineering, information systems and business process management. His ongoing work focuses on combining data mining and formal methods for analysis and monitoring of business processes. He has published extensively in conferences and journals across the fields of software engineering and information systems. He is co-inventor of seven granted US/EU patents and co-author of the textbook "Fundamentals of Business Process Management", which is used in over 200 universities worldwide.
