Applications of virtual laboratories in chemical engineering education

Recently, the importance of using technological advancements to create more engaging and effective teaching methods has grown. The purpose of the study was to explore how virtual laboratories could elevate learning experience during laboratory training in Chemical Engineering. The research builds a bridge between educational technology and chemical engineering. The study explores the topic through various study setups including linear and nonlinear progressing virtual laboratories, expert interviews, and virtual laboratory experiences consumed through a VR headset.

The research indicated that virtual laboratories could significantly enhance real-life laboratory training by improving immersion and motivation amongst students. However, such virtual experiences are not seen as sufficient way to replace real-life laboratory training but can act as a means for enhancing it. The study found that achieving high realism in virtual laboratories shouldn't be a main goal. Instead, the focus should be on creating gamified, engaging content that places the user experience at the core.

The research findings have important implications for the future of laboratory instruction in higher education. The design and technology recommended in this work can be used to curate unique, enhanced learning experiences for students in chemical engineering.
