Integrating transport with other land uses: policy combinations and calibrations

Summary 

An important way of promoting more sustainable patterns of urban development is integrating transport with other land uses so that we can make more efficient use of limited resources, especially land, energy and materials. Integration can also help to create more attractive and liveable cities in which to live and work. Three aspects of integration are crucial. The first is the combination of mutually-supportive land uses in the city. The second aspect is linking urban land uses with transport infrastructure. The third aspect of integration is making sure that different transport modes and their infrastructure connect with each other. This requires both physical integration and operational integration. Integrating transport with other land uses requires close attention to policy mixes and policy calibration. While these issues have been discussed in theory more work needs to be done to translate them into practice.

Biography

Dominic Stead is recently appointed Professor of Transport and Land Use Planning at the Department of Built Environment, Aalto University. Previously, Prof. Stead has held a professor position at TU Delft, the Netherlands, as well as guest professor positions at University of Malta, Friedrich-Alexander Universität, and HafenCity Universität. He is also a honorary research fellow at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London. Prof. Stead's research and teaching focus is on policy-making processes related to urban transport and spatial planning. He has recently been involved in research projects funded by the ESPON Programmes, European Framework Programmes and the United Nations. He has published widely in international journals and books, including 6 co-edited books, while he is also the associate editor for Europe of Planning Practice and Research, and a member of five editorial boards of international peer-reviewed journals.
