The Language of Coordination, from Humans to AI Agents
Luca Maria Aiello
IT University of Copenhagen
Abstract: A defining task for humankind is to achieve mass coordination to tackle global challenges such as climate change, and pandemics. We created Natural Language Processing tools that can capture psycho-social dimensions from conversations that can explain spontaneous coordination when used strategically in the public debate. Furthermore, we explore the role of AI agents as tools that can promote cooperation dynamics, highlighting several open challenges. Our results expose critical scenarios in which AI can fail us when used as an assistive technology, autonomous agent, and as ways to generate synthetic content for online consumption.
Bio: Luca Maria Aiello is Professor of Data Science at the IT University of Copenhagen, where he is member of the NEtwoRks, Data and Society group (NERDS). Previously, he worked for 10 years as a Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs and Nokia Bell Labs. He conducts research in Computational Social Science with a special focus on understanding cooperation processes through the study of conversational language with the use of advanced Natural Language Processing tools. He has been awarded a 3-year grant from the Carlsberg foundation to investigate emergent processes of climate action in online social media. His work has been covered by hundreds of articles published by news outlets worldwide including Wired, WSJ, and BBC. He was once interviewed by Captain James T. Kirk.
This guest talk is hosted by Associate Professor Mikko Kivelä, Department of Computer Science.
