Defence of doctoral thesis in the field of applied physics, M.Sc. Vahid Arabzadeh

Title of the doctoral thesis is "Modeling and optimization of urban energy systems for large-scale integration of variable renewable energy generation"

To reach the future emissions goals, the energy systems require to be decarbonized. Cities have a key role in this context due to high energy demand. Implementing the large-scale variable renewable electricity schemes is an effective strategy for decarbonization, but these include several challenges, such as supply and demand mismatch. Therefore, a mix of technologies may be needed to achieve ambitious decarbonization targets in cities. This doctoral thesis aims to develop solutions for urban energy system transition with implementing wind power. The results of this thesis show several decarbonization pathways of the urban energy systems. For Helsinki as an example, the solutions can be including power-to-heat sector-coupling, a link to the national power system, or considering sustainable biomass and carbon-neutral fuels for CHP and heating.
