Vilen Looga, M.Sc.(Tech), will defend the dissertation "Energy effiency in large-scale Internet-of-Things networks" on 19 June 2018 at 12 noon at the Aalto University School of Science, lecture room T2, Konemiehentie 2, Espoo. This dissertation looks at how user and app behaviour plays a significant role in how network traffic affects the battery life of a wireless Internet-connected device.

We are seeing a tremendous proliferation of wireless Internet-connected consumer and industrial devices. From smartphones in users’ hands to Internet of Things nodes streaming data from factory machines, these devices have enabled new categories of services that are vital to industrial and consumer markets. However, despite significant improvements to various hardware and software aspects, the battery life of these devices still remains a concern. What else could be done to improve the energy efficiency of wireless devices?

This dissertation looks at how user and app behaviour impacts the battery life of the device, specifically by influencing the network traffic volume and profile. User and app behaviour have a strong impact on network traffic, which in turn influences energy efficiency of the device. To better understand these phenomena and the variables that affect them, we create activity and energy models, which can be of use to create leaner and more scalable energy profiling tools. We test our models through extensive experimental work in two example scenarios - Android phones and IoT nodes with IEEE 802.15.4 wireless connectivity.
