The Arctic region and its Indigenous Sámi people are facing irrevocable challenges and transformations. From global warming, melting ice conditions, competing geopolitical and commercial interests spurred by the green energy transition: the Arctic and its communities are at a turning point.

As the Arctic Region is crucial in regulating the global climate system, we invite you to join us and meet Ms Pirita Näkkäläjärvi, President of the Sámi Parliament in Finland, to consider the future of the Arctic. Together, through discussion led by Aalto University's Associate Professor of Design Andrea Botero, we will explore how Sámi people in Finland actively withstand climate change all the while preserving and sustaining traditional Sámi livelihoods as well as the future of their vibrant community life.

Pirita Näkkäläjärvi is the President of the Sámi Parliament in Finland. Pirita Näkkäläjärvi has had a unique career combining indigenous rights advocacy and global business. She is a third term elected member of the Sámi Parliament in Finland and a member of the Inari municipal council from the Greens’ list (ind.). She worked as the Head of Yle Sápmi (the Sámi-language operations of the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle) in 2012–2016. Pirita has had a long career working along the Mergers & Acquisitions lifecycle at Merrill Lynch, Nokia, Booz & Company, Metso, Strategy&, PwC, EY-Parthenon and Helen Ventures.

Andrea Botero is Associate Professor (New Frontiers of Design) at the Department of Design, Aalto University where she currently leads the INUSE research group. As a design practitioner she has worked in several design consultancies and in multiple R&D projects as product owner, interaction designer and design researcher. In addition, she is Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá (COL) and Guest Professor at the Centre for Sustainable and Digital Transformation, Aalborg University (DK).
