Beyond materials science: artist talk on material multiplicity

During the event, the audience will have a chance to familiarise itself with some of the conceptual ways of thinking about materials that inform the practice of Matthew C. Wilson, the Aalto University Artist in Residence. For Wilson, a material constitutes a multiplicity understood not only in terms of its structure and physical behavior, but also as a potential agent of histories, ideas, ideologies, values, and philosophies. Similarly, the mutability of materials through physical production processes occurs in relation to changing sociocultural processes that produce and mutate their meanings. We are looking forward to addressing those thoughts to the wider scientific community and initiate the discussion.

The Materials Platform welcomes the Aalto Community to join CHEM and SCI Artist-in-Residence's talk in Nanotalo. On the 13th of June from 12:00 to 13:00, we host a thought-provoking presentation followed by a discussion around materials, materiality, and manifold methodologies of engaging with them. As an artist drawing from a range of different fields in the sciences and social sciences, Matthew C. Wilson will share his approach to materials as multiplicities of materiality and immateriality.

We invite the audience to initiate the discussion on collaborative practices in art and science, embrace the exploratory nature of Aalto research, and envision the future synergy within the Aalto community, arts, science, and technology practitioners.

We'll start at 12:00 with Matthew's presentation and pizza will be served. After a 20-minute presentation, we invite our guests to ask questions and participate in the discussion. The event is free, no registration is required.

Please note, a photographer will document the event. It's always OK to say that you do not want to appear in any photos -- speak directly with the photographer.
