OCEAN project contributed to increasing competitiveness of Finnish industries, academia and public sector by presenting state of the art specifications and value adding opportunities for next generation open cloud computing ecosystems.

The objective was to create and validate world class staging platform specifications, program portfolio and management processes for open cloud computing test platform and surrounding ecosystem. In addition, it was to create supporting training material and business model scenarios for potential users, and engage relevant stakeholders in planning and future development.

OCEAN was building on earlier state of the art research and experimentation in initiatives like EIT ICT Labs, Future Internet Public-Private Partnership, FIRE and National ICT SHOK. The project was part of larger European and national Cloud Computing initiatives, and collaborated with ERT, ECP, Berkley BRIE, Finncloud and DIGILE for increased reach and impact. Within Aalto, the project was implemented in collaboration with CKIR, the Department of International Business and the School of Science.

The project was built on the assumption that the use cases for mobile data on devices have converged and IoT and M2M visions drive the development of the internet. Consumers' interests are only in applications and services, which requires the underlying network to become completely transparent and heterogeneous. Consequently the project focused separately on cloud applications, platforms and infrastructures.

The work was organized in four workstreams:

  • State of the Art analysis of the best in class technologies, applications, cloud set ups, both proprietary and open source (desk research on the identified benchmark cases, interviews with advisors).
  • Ecosystem analysis of successful cloud instances and use cases (desk research, in-depth case analysis of identified benchmark cases and associations)
  • Value analysis of the business potential (categorization of different existing business models, feasibility analysis to various studied use cases, platform partners' context)
  • Toolbox and training materials, recommendations for training programs (expert interviews with Advisors, Platform partners, building on the results of the ecosystem and business case analysis)
