Course description
The course examines the responsible use of the seas through three key themes: societal needs, technology and the marine environment, and sustainability, risks, and regulation. The video lectures address topics such as global maritime trade, maritime economics, sustainability, operations in icy waters, marine engineering, ships and offshore assets, safety and environmental impacts, policy and regulation, and creativity. Learners are encouraged to reflect on how the use of the seas represents a complex interplay between societal needs, regulatory frameworks, and technological developments—offering both challenges and opportunities for professionals across disciplines.
All course videos and assignments are in English, with subtitles available in English, Finnish, and Swedish.
The estimated completion time is 27 hours, corresponding to 1 ECTS credit. The course includes 22 video lectures, complemented by quizzes and reflection tasks that support learning.
You can complete the course at your own pace—either gradually over several weeks or in a more concentrated timeframe. To earn a certificate, you must watch all videos, achieve at least 75% on the quizzes, and submit all reflection tasks.
