In the dominant linear economy, materials flow from extraction through production and use to the inevitable trash heap. The idea of circular economy turns that on its head to keep materials in use longer using strategies like reuse, remanufacture, recycling, and replacing ownership with rentals. We study circular economy from a variety of angles, including business models, governance, and systemic transitions.
Ongoing projects include:
• REwood seed project, in partnership with Aalto CHEM and ENG, that studies how to give used wood resources multiple use lives before it is pulped or burnt as energy
• Bridging circular economy technologies and business models seed project, in partnership with Aalto ENG, that explores how to educate technical circular economy researchers on circular business models
Frugal innovations by businesses in resource-scarce environments are one promising approach to poverty alleviation.
The innovation of new sustainable products, services, business models and forms of consumption can help tackle big problems like climate change and resource depletion.
