8th Annual Research Winter Day – Focusing on the success stories in Industry-University Co-operation

The Research Winter Day 2019 of the School of Electrical Engineering will take place on Wednesday March 13th at 14.00–18.00 at Open Innovation House (Maarintie 6, Espoo) auditorium and the restaurant area where food and drinks are served.

The event will start with keynotes by Tuula Ruokonen (Director of Digital Services Solutions at Valmet) and Matti Kauhanen (Business Unit Technology Manager at ABB) sharing their stories and views on cooperation with Aalto University and its influence on the development of the company.

After the keynote talks, you will have the opportunity to visit demo stands where our experts will let you see, feel and hear the innovativeness of our research. Come and experience space in the VR world, see nanosatellites in action and hear a choir in 3D. We will also show you the latest innovations in health technology, communications engineering, robotics, power electronics and micro and nanotechnology.

The event is open to the whole Aalto community and stakeholders. Please register by Monday March 4th 2019.

With best regards,
Vesa Välimäki, Vice Dean for Research

Keynotes

Tuula Ruokonen

“At its best, a university is able to offer a company knowledge about the possibilities of recent technology, excited and competent research resources as well as concrete application and testing objects.”

Tuula Ruokonen
Director, Digital Services Solutions
Valmet Technologies Oy

Matti Kauhanen

“The most significant benefit of our collaboration with Aalto University is the expertise it provides us.”

Business Unit Technology Manager
ABB Oy Drives and Controls

Demos

Aalto Virtual Planetarium

The Aalto Virtual Planetarium is a tour of the inner Solar System, with the grand structures of planetary magnetospheres show through the eyes of a space physicist. Aimed at education and outreach, the immersive virtual reality experience demonstrates Aalto space research, including the plasma physics of the Sun, magnetosphere of inner planets, the Finland100 satellite and cometary environments. Complex structures and spatial scales of magnetospheric physics are intuitively presented, with plans for research tools of 3D simulation data based on the system.

Magnetic levitation control

Actively controlled magnetic levitation enables contactless and frictionless movement and provides various advantages, such as greater precision and higher speeds. The control algorithms applied in this demonstration (developed by our master’s students) extend to industrial applications with active magnetic bearings and bearingless motors.

Electric jukebox drive

Let there be sound, there was sound… This rotating jukebox consists of an electric motor, a frequency converter, and a processor board. Similar setups are often used in the development of control algorithms for electric motor drives and for grid-tied converters.

3D sound with VR

A recorded sound scene and a 360-degree video of a few live events. The sound is reproduced with a technique, which accounts for the head orientation of the user. The technique provides the impression that for example the choir singing comes from a certain direction. This sound reproduction technology has been developed at the Acoustics Lab of Aalto University.

Fractal sound generator

How does mathematics sound like as music? Fractals refer to mathematical patterns that retain an identical appearance irrespective of the scale on which they are examined. In his fractal work Associate Professor Ville Pulkki opens the horn of the best-known fractal curve, the Koch snowflake, and transfers it into a musical melody.

Cell-free Ultra-Dense Network (UDN)

This demonstration presents the proof-of-concept created using the Aalto Radio Framework platform providing positioning based on data from an outdoor measurement campaign conducted to experimentally validate the solutions developed to address practical issues encountered by implementations.

Satellites

Rapid development of technology and increasing awareness of global challenges have increased the need for lean and agile space missions, and calls for a new generation of engineers to design them. The space journey of Aalto-2 satellite has already ended. Aalto-1 and Suomi 100 satellite has worked according to plan and science data have been received from all of their research equipment. The Centre of Excellence’s first FORESAIL-1 satellite is already under construction in Aalto as well as Aalto-3, which is the third member of the Aalto Satellites family.

CT device

Computed Tomography (CT) is a non-invasive method that is widely used in many applications to reveal inner structures of an unknown object using propagation of x-ray through the object from multiple view or projections. Since the beginning of its development during the 1960s, it gave rise to a deluge of applications in medicine, non-destructive testing and security application.

Health measuring chair

Health measuring chair is a solution for simultaneously monitoring various health parameters of individuals, such as weight, bioimpedance, electrocardiogram, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation. The aim is to make regular health checks easier, more attractive and physically undemanding.

Magnetophosphene stimulator

The human retina can be stimulated using low-frequency magnetic fields, generating subjective visual sensations, termed magnetophosphenes, that appear as flickering white light. We are currently developing a new type of stimulator that generates magnetophosphenes using amplitude-modulated magnetic fields.

Wireless EKG measurements with electronics

Electrocardiography (EKG) is a technique for recording the activity of the heart and is commonly used by clinicians to detect cardiac problems. Recent developments in electronics have made it possible to integrate reliable low-cost EKG measurements in a variety of consumer health products.

Micro and Nanotechnology

The research groups in microelectronics and nanotechnology work with world-class research facilities and instruments; the biggest clean rooms in the Nordic countries are located in the Micro- and nanotechnology centre Micronova. The research field spans from microfluidics to single electron devices. The techniques used range from deposition of atomic layers and nanometer sized structures to devices that utilize structures up to hundreds of microns.
