We are currently moving toward an energy system that is sustainable, smart and flexible. The energy transition requires new ways of thinking about energy, including its sources, production, markets, transmission and use. The Master's Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions is an excellent place for you to start reshaping our energy system.

The Master's Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions is divided into four majors. Studies in all majors begin by building a solid theoretical basis, which is then expanded upon in interdisciplinary and advanced studies to expand your view of the energy challenges facing our society.

The Sustainable Energy Conversion Processes major focuses on both the background physical and chemical phenomena – such as heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid flows – as well as energy conversion systems as whole. As a graduate of the major, you will have:

  • An understanding of the big picture of sustainable energy conversion pathways, which is of utmost importance for operating the energy system effectively while minimising its environmental impact.
  • Multidisciplinary set of skills. Flexibility, a broad-minded way of thinking, collaboration and the ability to understand energy systems as a whole are important learning outcomes in this major.  As a graduate of the programme, you will have versatile and multidisciplinary research and development skills to tackle the many industrial and societal challenges found in the energy sector.
  • Tools for contributing to sustainable future. Energy technology plays an important role on creating better health systems, security and sustainable society. During your studies you will analyze and evaluate existing and future challenges in the field of energy, and the role of energy technologies and processes in addressing these challenges.
  • The theoretical basis and practical skills. You will be able to identify the fundamental natural phenomena of modern energy conversion technologies and apply different methods to design and develop them.
  • Experience from the field. Graduates have hands-on experience related to real-world energy system and testing.

Content of the studies

Understanding energy conversion and storage technologies is essential for designing and operating the sustainable energy systems of the future. To this end, courses in the Sustainable Energy Conversion Processes major cover renewable energy technologies, computational fluid dynamics methods for energy, simulation of energy systems, energy storage, biomass conversion and power plant technology. Our graduates have the opportunity to become leading experts in topics such as bioenergy, alternative energy, thermal processes, energy modelling and simulation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the major, the student will:

  • Identify the fundamental natural phenomena of modern energy conversion technologies and apply different methods to design and develop them
  • Be able to take a holistic view to understand dependencies across large energy systems
  • Analyze and evaluate existing and future challenges in the field of energy, and the role of energy technologies and processes in addressing these challenges
  • Design sustainable energy conversion and storage solutions based on a scientific approach

Structure of studies

The master’s degree (120 cr) consists of the major studies (66 cr), elective studies (24 cr) and a master’s thesis (30 cr). The major studies are divided into programme common courses, major common courses and advanced studies.

Only the applications who fulfill the requirements for these criteria will be evaluated against the full set of evaluation criteria.

After the evaluation of the remaining criteria below, the best applicants will be selected based on the joint evaluation of all criteria.
