The Aalto University Mentoring Programme for alumni and students

The Aalto University Mentoring Programme connects students and working-life experts to facilitate career design and self-development. It is about mutual benefit and learning.

Registration for mentor candidates for the autumn programme opens on 1 June!
Life-wide learning

Student, do you need help in considering your career options and finding your own strengths? Discussion support and experience-based perspectives from a senior expert? An opportunity to tackle your future career dreams and self-development?

Alumni, are you ready for open dialogue, to share your experiences, knowledge and skills and develop your sparring skills? Do you want to meet the newest Aalto generation and join our interdisciplinary mentor network? Do you want to discover new cultural perspectives?

The programme brings together three hundred Finnish and international students and alumni in Finland and abroad each year. The programme is a meeting ground for different fields, disciplines, nations and generations.

The content of the programme

The mentoring programme begins in November with a joint kick-off event for all mentoring pairs, where participants are told about the purpose and goals of mentoring. The programme concludes with a closing event in May.

In addition to opening and closing events, we organise smaller events for experience sharing. Mentoring pairs can also arrange events themselves if they wish. Events will be held primarily in English, as half of the students participating in the programme and are international students. There are also international experts among the mentors. During the programme, there is also the opportunity to participate in cross-mentoring.

To encourage knowledge sharing and mutual networking among participants, we recommend both mentors and actors to sign up the social media channels of the mentoring programme.

Mentoring pairs may decide independetly whether to meet in close meetings or remotely. The programme includes mentors and exchange students living elsewhere in Finland and abroad, for whom close meetings are not possible. Thus, it would be a good idea to prepare for this when applying for the programme.

What has been said about the mentoring programme

”As a mentor, I always learn how new minds start to approach the business world. New ideas, new enthusiasm and also new topics like sustainability.”

“There is an outstanding reward in sharing experiences as it empowers the individual and also builds an even stronger community of tomorrow.”

“The experience that I gained guiding someone to plan and achieve his/her goals. The networking and friendship that we've built. On top of that, the inner satisfaction of helping someone was great.”

“I understand more about my strengths and weakness. What types of jobs could fit better my profile. I learn about the many types of certifications that can leverage my profile. Also, many aspects of the local culture, like taxes, loans, bank accounts, how to get housing and savings.”

The application for mentors candidates opens on 1 June, and for mentees (students) on 15 September. Stay tuned!
