Would you like to improve the quality of your visuals? This two-day workshop introduces visual communication fundamentals and how to apply them to all types of scientific presentation.
Seyens Visual Communication workshop

13.05.2020 update: Please, note that the event is FULL. If you're interested in organizing the workshop you're welcome to contact Dr.Jernej Zupanc directly or send us an email.

Join Dr. Jernej Zupanc (Computer Science Ph.D., Fulbright alumnus, Horizon 2020 evaluator, published photographer) on June 1 and 2 for a comprehensive introduction to creating visuals for all kinds of scientific communication, and you will have the opportunity to work on your own images with expert advice.

Workshop aims:

  • You will learn to effectively communicate your scientific ideas and results by applying the best visual communication practices to your research communication.
  • You will understand the principles and useful design approaches used by experts.
  • You will get actionable advice and feedback on your own pre-submitted materials. It is an immersive webinar, structured, easy to follow, memorable, useful, and fun.

Workshop takeaway:

  • You will get feedback on a selection of your figures, slides, and posters submitted ahead of the webinar. In an exercise, you will draw a sketch of your research (a graphical abstract) and get feedback on that as well.

Workshop format:

  • Interactive webinar: fundamentals, real examples, and practical advice
  • Commenting on pre-submitted figures: ahead of the webinar, you submit your scientific figures, posters, and slide presentations, and I prepare a selection. You receive suggestions on how to improve your own materials from the presenter and peers.
  • Q&A discussion: we try to solve the most pressing issues you have with your science communication.

Workshop instructor: Dr. Jernej Zupanc

He has already worked with close to 3,000 researchers at excellent institutions in 19 countries and is considered to be one of the leading experts in the visual communication of science.

He holds a Ph.D. (2011) in computer science, is a National Geographic published photographer and Fulbright alumnus. He worked as the head of computer vision at a startup and as a Horizon 2020 project evaluator but now focuses on workshops and grant writing.

How to apply:

  • We accept only those who can attend the whole workshop - two full days on June 1 & 2.
  • You need to prepare materials for the workshop you would like to develop and send it to Jernej at his request because the workshop will be tuned to the topics of the attendees.
  • There is a strict limit of 18 places; it's important that when you register, you are 100% certain you will attend. Spots are valuable, so when you register, you are committing to coming.
  • At the moment, we are sending the invitations to those who registered for a canceled April workshop. In case there are a few places left, we will consider opening the application to other Aalto people.
