SURFACE (2017-2020)

Metrology Research Institute was involved in European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) project SURFACE - "Pavement surface characterisation for smart and efficient road lighting".

Background

The goal of this project was to address the current deficiencies in European standard regarding (i) the definition and characterization of road surface photometry, (ii) traceable measurement and characterization methods for road surface characteristics and (iii) traceable reference data for photometric tables. The results were used by CEN TC169/WG12 in the revision of EN 13201 series, and by CIE TC4-50 in current CIE publications under revision.

Metrology Research Institute led the WP3 on Prenormative guidelines and database.

Metrology Research Institute will contributed in providing procedures, requirements and data analysis methodologies for the measurement of the luminance or the reduced luminance coefficient considering aspects involved from sample selection to data analysis (such as aging of road surfaces, wet conditions, spectral properties etc.) in defining the parameters and quantities for the characterization of instruments, for their calibration and traceability and in producing pre-normative guidelines. The aim was that the guideline would be discussed during CIE TC4-50 meetings, and summarized in at least one ISO TC274 and CEN TC169 plenary meetings.

Identification of available database

Metrology Research Institute with Cerema and Metrosert contributed in research and evaluated existing available data for r-tables, using data in technical and scientific publications.

Metrology Research Institute contributed in writing a report on photometric quantities for road surface materials to support EN 13201 reference tables. The report describes new or updated standard r-table considering a wide spread of road surface types. Data were included from ad hoc measurements by stakeholders.

Aalto contributed in publication of a report on optimised geometries in real conditions for the characterisation of photometric quantities for road surface materials to support CIE TC4-50 actions, EN 13201 and its future revisions.
