About the studies
Master's Programme in Security and Cloud Computing (SECCLO) focuses on two specific aspects of modern computing systems: cloud computing and information security. With cloud computing we mean highly distributed and scalable computation and data storage in data centers, as well as physically accessible devices. Information security encompasses the protection of computation, communication, and data from unauthorized access.
During the SECCLO studies, our students will gain both practical engineering knowledge and theoretical insights into
- secure systems engineering,
- distributed application development,
- network and service architectures,
- cloud and mobile platforms.
We aim to educate highly professional engineers to meet both the immediate hiring requirements and the long-term needs of the European ICT industry.
Content of the studies
SECCLO is a double degree programme offered by a consortium of six highly ranked universities in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, and France. The first year of the Master's programme is taken at Aalto University.
During the two semesters of courses at Aalto (60 ECTS), students will learn about the fundamental concepts, methods and the latest technologies of secure systems engineering, distributed application development, network and service architectures, ubiquitous computing, and cloud and mobile computing platforms. The first year ends with a summer school on a relevant information security topic and a summer internship taken at one of our industry partners or a university research group.
For the second year, students transfer to their second-year university where they are able to specialize (30 ECTS) in
- Communications Systems (KTH, Sweden),
- Information Security (NTNU, Norway),
- Reliable Distributed Systems (DTU, Denmark),
- Cryptography (University of Tartu, Estonia) or
- Big Data Security (EURECOM, France).
The fourth and final semester is dedicated to the thesis research and writing of the Master's thesis (30 ECTS). The programme leads into two Master of Science degrees (double degree) from the two universities the student has studied in.
The SECCLO graduates will be well trained for international industrial R&D jobs, security engineering and consulting, various expert roles, and doctoral studies. During the obligatory summer internship, SECCLO students work in a real R&D environment or expert organization as members of a project team. Our current industry and research partners are:
- F-Secure Corporation, Finland
- KONE Corporation, Finland
- VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
- Intel Labs Europe, Germany
- Nokia Bell Labs, France
- Cybernetica, Estonia
- GuardTime, Estonia
- RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Security Lab
SECCLO had its first student intake in 2018 and the first graduates are expected in 2020.
Examples of typical job titles in the SECCLO predecessor (NordSecMob 2006-2016) include Software Engineer, Security Analyst, Development Engineer, Software & Systems Reliability Engineer, IT Security Specialist, R&D Engineer, Wireless Engineer, Enterprise Data Architect, Security Architect, Data Scientist, Web Developer, Security Engineer, Mobile Developer, and Research Assistant.
Companies where the NordSecMob alumni have worked include Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Google, F-Secure Corporation, Facebook, Amazon, Accenture, Nordea Bank, Skype, Siemens, Telia Company, Alibaba Group, IBM Research, Danske Babk, FireEye, Inc., as well as the following universities: Imperial College London, University of Oxford, UC Irvine, Saarland University, TU Eindhoven, Northern Kentucky University, University of Waterloo, ETH Zurich, TU Darmstadt, University of Glasgow, TU Berlin, University of South Australia, EPFL, KU Leuven, University of Geneva, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and University of Trento.
95% of the NordSecMob graduates had found a job within 6 months after graduation.
What our students say
The quotes below are taken from the SECCLO 1st year student feedback 2019.
“Aalto curriculum was a right mix of practical and theoretical studies. I learned to get work done in smart ways and novel ways for finding solutions. The interactions with the other international students broadened the horizons of learning and knowledge sharing.”
“The staff is supportive, with everything you need help with, the student culture is outstanding. I am so glad that I made the decision to be part of this programme.”
“The summer internship helped me gain a better understanding of the field while putting into action the skills obtained during the studies."
"From the support of the wonderful staff, the guidance of the excellent lecturers, to the colourful students who I grew to call my friends, this year has been absolutely phenomenal. I am now more confident to go out to my second year and into the world."
Tuition fees and scholarships
