Humberto Almeida

T212 Mechanical Engineering

I am a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at Queen's University Belfast, UK. The primary focus of my current research is on Uncertainty Quantification in the design and analysis of future composite aerostructures.

My main research interests rely on the mechanics of fibre-reinforced composites, both computationally and experimentally.

My research aims to develop lighter, more damage-tolerant, yet safer, composite aerostructures. Robust computational models will predict the mechanical response of fibre-reinforced composites under damage-inducing loads, accounting for material and manufacturing uncertainties, combined with a physically-based damage model that spans across micro-macro scales.

I also develop computational frameworks to optimise composite structures with the aim to take most of their lightweight character by either maximising their mechanical performance or minimising their mass under particular sets of loads and boundary conditions. 

I am an active Visiting Researcher at Aalto University where I work on optimisation strategies for fibre-reinforced composites and lattice materials.

I am also a Visiting Researcher at the University of Manchester, UK, in which my research focusses on computer tomography (CT) and 'online' mechanical tests assisted by CT and synchrotron techniques to understand the microstructure of composites and their damage initiation and propagation whilst an external load is progressively being applied onto them.
