About the studies
A reliable and affordable energy system is a basic requirement of a modern society. Today, energy systems face challenges with the flexible integration of different energy forms (power, heat, fuels) and with the increasing complexity of the systems due to distributed power generation and emergence of active produces-customers, i.e. prosumers. Integrating intermittent renewable sources like solar, wind and wave energy, into the energy system is one of the main challenges of our sustainable future. This major offers basic understanding of energy systems, the main challenges faced by our energy solutions today and possible ways towards a sustainable future.
The major offers a firm theoretical base, as well as practical tools and skills needed by engineers working on the field of energy systems. In order to prepare students for understanding complex and multidisciplinary problems of the field, the major is designed to be flexible. Courses include theoretical considerations, experimental work, industrial applications, and first-hand experience. The major prepares students for the current and future challenges faced by energy companies, the manufacturing industry, consulting companies and society. Students are well-prepared to pursue doctoral studies. Upon completion of the major, the student will be able to:
- Understand the fundamentals of energy systems
- Have holistic view which enables analyzing complex dependencies in vast energy systems
- Optimize and develop the energy systems, taking into account different energy forms
- Understand the role of various parties in energy markets
- Develop applications for energy efficiency and sustainability
- Analyze and evaluate existing and future challenges in the field of energy systems
The graduates of the Master’s Programme in Advanced Energy Solutions are capable of acting as an expert of in at least one of the following fields, depending on the chosen major: new power and energy systems and markets, advanced energy and power production technologies, building and communal energy design and use, bioenergy or industrial energy processes.
Typical employers are energy companies, energy-intensive industries, engineering and consultant companies as well as universities and research institutes. The graduates will able to apply novel, adaptive and socially intelligent thinking and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration with well-trained project management skills for entrepreneurship initiatives concerning energy solutions.
The programme qualifies for doctoral studies (Doctor of Science in an applicable field).

Content of the studies
The Sustainable Energy Systems and Markets major offers a firm theoretical base as well as practical tools and skills needed by engineers working on the field of energy systems.
The master’s degree (120 credits) consists of the major studies, elective studies and a master’s thesis. The major consists of common studies shared by all majors of the Advanced Energy Solutions programme, major-specific common studies and advanced studies. Common courses give the student a basic understanding of the field. Specialization is built mainly through advanced studies, where students may choose courses from different topics.Elective studies are chosen entirely by the student. The master’s thesis concludes the degree.
Structure of the studies
The Master's degree (120 ECTS) is composed of studies in the major (65 ECTS), elective studies (25 ECTS), and the Master's thesis (30 ECTS).
Students are required to complete a Master's thesis, which is a research assignment with a workload corresponding to 30 ECTS credits. The topic of the thesis is agreed upon by the student and the supervising professor. Master's theses are typically written for a company or for one of the research projects of the department(s) in question.
The study environment in the programme is strongly international, and studies are conducted in multicultural groups. The School of Electrical Engineering offers diverse possibilities for student exchange all over the world. Exchange studies can be easily included in the degree e.g. as an international minor. Other possibilities for developing one’s global competence are e.g. conducting practical training abroad, taking a summer course abroad or acting as a tutor for first-year students.
The research in this programme is linked to several focus areas in the School of Electrical engineering and in the School of Engineering. Aalto University Energy Platform is closely connected to this programme.

Programme-specific admission requirements
Criteria for academic evaluation in external student admissions for master’s programmes
The following criteria will be used by the Master’s Programme Advanced Energy Solutions study options for academically evaluating spring 2019 applicants for master’s level admissions:
•university/higher education institution; recognized for high quality of education and research
•degree and relevance of studies; suit very well or excellently to the study option in question
•academic performance; need to be mainly very good or excellent
•motivation and commitment to the programme; should be clearly in connection with the study option in question
The aim of the studies towards a Master of Science (Technology) degree is to deepen the student’s learning in the study option to which he or she been admitted. Successful applicants to the degree programme have a relevant bachelor’s degree or another relevant degree of the same level or a relevant master’s degree in another field.
The academic evaluation is based on the obligatory application materials specified in the general admission criteria for the Aalto University programmes in the field of technology in 2019, as well as on the appendices specific to the study option, as indicated on the Studies web pages relating to applications. All the above-mentioned documents have to be submitted by the deadline. Study attainments completed after the application deadline will not be considered in the evaluation.
Applicants accepted for admission may need to take up to 20 credits of supplementary studies as a prerequisite for their master’s programme studies, according to Aalto’s 2019 admissions criteria for education leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of technology. The aim of the Master’s Programme of Advanced Energy Solutions admissions is not to assign supplementary studies.
