Camilla Groth
Camilla Groth is Associate Professor in Design and Materiality. Her research focuses on the relationships between materials, making, knowledge, and design practice. Working across the fields of design and craft research, material culture, and creative practice, she is particularly interested in how engagement with materials contributes to processes of thinking, learning, and change.
Before entering academia, Groth worked professionally in the fields of ceramics and design. Her experience as a practitioner continues to inform both her making practice, research, and teaching. She has developed practice-based and practice-led approaches to explore embodied and experiential knowledge, and learning through material engagement.
Groth is one of the initiators of the Biennial International Conference for the Craft Sciences (BICCS) and co-convenor of the Design Research Society's Special Interest Group on Experiential Knowledge (Eksig). Through these activities, she contributes to international discussions on craft, design, making, and knowledge creation, while promoting the practitioner-research that happens in the professional practices.
Her current research is increasingly concerned with sustainability and the role of human-material relationships in sustainable transitions. She is interested in how interactions between people and materials can support more sustainable ways of designing, making, using, and valuing material resources. This includes exploring how material experiences, material literacy, and practices of care can contribute to sustainable material development and encourage more responsible and regenerative material practices.
She has authored and edited several books and publications on Embodied cognition in crafts and design, Embodied learning, Arts education for sustainable change and Experiential knowledge.
