Sofia Pantouvaki founded Costume in Focus (2013), the first research group on performance costume and led the research project Costume Methodologies(2014-2018) funded by the Academy of Finland. Her research currently focuses on the theory and practice of performance costume with a special interest in design for opera and dance, costume and technology, and costume and biomaterials; curation and exhibition design; scenography as theatre education; and clothing in the concentration camps of World War Two.

Gold Medal PQ 2015 for Best Exposition in the Student Section of Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space for the exhibit "The Other Side", National representation of Finland at the Student Section of PQ15. The exhibit also won the PQ Children's Award. Exhibition Curators: Sampo Pyhälä, Sofia Pantouvaki (Aalto) and Kimmo Karjunen (UniARTS).
