Broadening Automated Assessment: Improving Learning Experiences with Computing Education Research

Lassi Haaranen

Abstract:

This talk reflects on the lessons learned from a variety of past teaching experiences. Emphasis is placed on incorporating authentic tools to exercises. We discuss how realistic workflows and tools facilitate legitimate peripheral participation (LPP) – which enables students to contribute meaningfully during a course and thus enhance their learning. Additionally, the benefits and drawbacks of automated assessment are discussed. The latter portion of the talk discusses extending existing tools for interactive online learning.

Bio:

Lassi Haaranen successfully defended his Ph.D in Aalto University's Department of Computer Science investigating using games in computer science education in February 2019. He examined the efficacy of gamification in introductory CS courses and the role of gaming participation in sparking interest in computer science. In addition, he has published research in automated assessment systems in computing education. He is looking for teaching focused opportunities where continuing computing education research is valued.
