When I started my bachelor’s degree studies in Aalto University, I wasn’t yet sure which subject I was going to choose for my master’s degree. Attending excursions to tunnel construction sites sealed my decision to go for the Master’s Programme in Geoengineering. There is just something thrilling about the vast tunnels and machines, and about rock as a material – every site is different and you can never be sure what you might discover when you start drilling!

I am currently finishing my master’s thesis at the design and consulting company Sitowise, where I’ve also been working in underground construction planning. The master’s programme has been much like the groundwork itself – it has given me a strong basis upon which I can build my expertise during my career. The field of geoengineering offers a variety of job opportunities, whether you’re more into calculating and planning or construction and contracting.

The studies have been intensive and there is a wide range of courses. The most memorable ones were the rock excavation and construction courses, where we had the chance to drill holes and simulate rock blasting in the research tunnel below the Otaniemi campus. I also spent one semester studying in Austria, where I was able to complement my studies with a few additional rock engineering courses.

Some of the best things that Aalto University has to offer are the guilds and student associations. They are a great way to meet people and learn some organisational skills. I have been actively involved in their activities, such as organising excursions and free-time activities and creating links between students and companies. There is something for everyone, whether you want to be an active member or just join an event every now and then!
