Aarne Hovi

My research focuses on lidar and passive optical remote sensing of forests and vegetation, and laboratory and field spectroscopy. I have been involved in developing the instrumentation and facilities of Aalto Remote Sensing Research Team’s spectral laboratory since 2017. I am continually seeking to develop new software, instrumentation, and methods for interpreting remote sensing data, and to improve our understanding of the optical properties of vegetation.

I hold a doctoral degree and the title of docent in forest sciences from the University of Helsinki. I am currently co-PI of the consortium project Transferable models for remote sensing of forest biomass with spaceborne lidar (2025–2028, Research Council of Finland) and PI of the project Biodiversity and albedo of forests: from hyperspectral technologies to climate benefits (2024–2027, Finnish Natural Resources Research foundation).
