Management of doctoral education at Aalto University

Vice President for Research, Jyri Hämäläinen, is in charge of doctoral education in the organisational structure of Aalto University. Doctoral Education Working Group (DEWG) develops doctoral education, discusses mutual issues and prepares university level guidelines on doctoral education at University level. At School level, doctoral education is lead by the directors of the doctoral programmes and the Doctoral programme Committees (DPC).

Doctoral education services are provided by the Research services of Aalto University, headed by Ella Bingham. Head of Doctoral education services Minna Söderqvist is in charge of the Doctoral education services team. Team members work at different Schools or at University level.

Doctoral programme committees

There is one doctoral programme in each Aalto School. The work of the doctoral programmes is guided by the School's Doctoral programme committee (DPC). The doctoral programme director acts as the chair of the doctoral programme committee.

Doctoral education working group (DEWG)

Doctoral programme directors discuss joint doctoral education issues in the doctoral education working group (DEWG) together with planning offiicers of the programmes and with doctoral student representatives. DEWG is lead by the Vice President for Research.

Doctoral student representatives

The Board of Aalto University Student Union AYY appoints the representatives for the Aalto University's Doctoral Education Working Group (DEWG) and makes the proposal for the representatives for the Doctoral programme committees (DPC). The members of the Doctoral programme committees are then appointed by the Academic committee of each School, based on AYY's proposal. Doctoral student representatives are appointed per calendar year.
