Designs for a Cooler Planet 2021

In a world of plenty, what is wise to design for the next generations? This year's theme is Resource wisdom, and a university-wide event will take place in September 2021.

Helsinki Design Week 2021 has landed in Otaniemi, showcasing three paths to resource wisdom

Radical ideas and prototypes contributing to a resource-wise future. The exhibitions and online lectures are open to everyone, and they belong to the official Helsinki Design Week programme.

Already for decades, we have been overusing our resources. It’s time to design radical systemic changes.

Resource wisdom is about the ability to use different resources – e.g. natural resources, raw materials, energy, products, time and space – with consideration of the next generations and the ecosystems, and by promoting wellbeing and sustainable development.

We are looking for inspiring research projects, prototypes, academic frameworks and study projects on resource wisdom. The project can be a work in progress, a ready solution, a pilot case, an art piece or a model of a process that you want to share with Aalto community, great public and our stakeholders.

The Designs for a Cooler Planet event will be organized for the third time on September 8–30, 2021 at Otaniemi and online. During Helsinki Design Week, Aalto University will showcase radical ideas and models contributing to a resource-wise future. Propose an exhibition, seminar, tour or another event which is related to resource wisdom. The showcased projects will be selected in March.

  • Who can apply: All Aalto faculty and students by Jan 31, 2021 (login to see the application form)
  • More information: designer in residence Enni Äijälä enni.aijala@aalto.fi

Helsinki Design Week is the largest design festival in the Nordic countries. The theme for 2021 is wisdom. Aalto University is one of Helsinki Design Week’s main partners.

The event also belongs to the Research-based Knowledge 2021 program, a joint initiative organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Academy of Finland and the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies.
