School of Engineering is an international unit with nearly 70 talented professors and 3400 full-time students. Currently, the department of Built Environment has 22 professors together with lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of departmental personnel is about 170.

Positions for Postdoctoral Researchers in Built Environment

We seek highly qualified and motivated individuals with enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality research to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the department of Built Environment. The position is for a period of 2 years, with a mid-term review, and should start during the autumn 2019 or 1st of January 2020 at the latest. The position is intended for full-time work.

Positions is part of a larger funding scheme from the School of Engineering that covers altogether 10 positions in the current call. Those positions will be allocated to the successful applicants at the three departments of the school.

Teaching duties of the position are limited to about 10% of working hours and are related to Master’s programs of the Department. In addition, modest activity in fund raising and guiding doctoral and master students is also expected. The Postdoctoral Researcher’s principal task is to conduct high quality research in one or several of the following themes:

  • Geoinformatics
  • Real estate economics
  • Spatial planning and transportation engineering
  • Water and environmental engineering

In the application, the candidate should clearly state the theme(s) his/her research would focus on and indicate how it is in line with the ongoing research of the group (https://www.aalto.fi/department-of-built-environment).

Research environment: The successful candidate will work within the research groups of related themes. The department has 3D studio, Water laboratory and hydraulic flume, Aalto Built Environment laboratory, Transportation laboratory and the Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research

Qualifications: Applicants must i) have completed a doctoral degree in a related field, ii) manifest a strong background in the research area s/he is applying for, and iii) show a strong publication record. Fluent English is required.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Connected and Automated Vehicles and Smart Mobility

We seek highly qualified individuals with enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality research for a Postdoctoral Researcher position, at the Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering group, School of Engineering. The position should start in early 2019, while the employment contract is typically for 1–2 years, with an option for renewal. The position is intended for full-time work. The research group provides strong support and academic freedom with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.

The candidate must have a high motivation for research, and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. The salary level for a postdoctoral researcher is competitive, and depends on experience and qualifications. The contract includes occupational health services, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The applicant is expected to conduct research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Traffic management and traffic operations with connected and automated vehicles
  • Evaluation of emerging smart mobility technologies
  • Governance and policy of emerging smart mobility technologies

Requirements and expectations

Background of the applicant should be well-aligned with the proposed research interests and roadmap for personal development. The applicant is expected to:   

  • Participate in proposal preparation
  • Publish in top journals and scientific conferences
  • Organize international scientific events
  • Guide doctoral and masters students
  • If applicable, teach in master’s program
