LECTURER TRACK POSITION IN SUSTAINABLE METALS PROCESSING

 

Materials sustainability and circular economy are topics that will shape the future of science, technology and society. The School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto plays a central role in this exciting field, as reflected by its leadership role in the multimillion-euro BATCircle project and the recently announced coordination of Battery Recycling research programs at the EU-level. From the educational perspective, Aalto University is Project coordinator and partner in various educational initiatives supported by EIT RawMaterials, such as the Circular Economy Design Forum.

The Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering has a unique profile in Finland with faculty members whose expertise and research activities encompass the entire metals production value chain.

 

To further strengthen our position as the top university in Finland where circular economy of raw materials is taught, we are looking for a lecturer to support our educational offer on circular economy and sustainability.

 

Your role and goals

The field of the position has been defined as the Circular Economy of Metals. Your tasks will include teaching, thesis supervision as well as the development and planning of the study programs. The emphasis of this position is on teaching, but your work would also include a research element, as lecturers are expected to conduct research and follow up the development of their own field.

Your experience and ambitions

You should have a suitable Doctoral degree in e.g. one of the following fields

-       Chemical Engineering

-       Minerals Processing

-       Metallurgical Engineering

-       Process Engineering

-       or other relevant field.

 

The applicants should have demonstrable pedagogical skills and teaching experience. The tasks in this position will mainly focus on Master’s level course facilitation, but also include Bachelor level teaching, which is mostly taught in Finnish. Therefore, sufficient Finnish language skills are required. Research and industrial merits will also be taken into account in the selection process.

 

The teaching activities and courses include the following topics

-       Mechanical processing of minerals for the production and recycling of raw materials

-       Fundamental concepts of metallurgical processes, including hydro- and pyrometallurgy

-       Process modelling is considered a plus

-       Technological and sustainability aspects of circular economy

-       Project-based courses including networking and interaction with industrial partners

The main responsibility of a Lecturer is teaching, complemented by an agreed-upon combination of research, activity in the scientific community and pedagogical leadership. Individuals placed in the Aalto University lecturer track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas within the scope of their duties. Although the main responsibility of a Lecturer is teaching, an active role in research and the respective research community is expected, for example, by instructing graduate students in their theses and scientific publications.

This position will be filled on the levels of the Aalto Lecturer Track system as either university teacher, university lecturer or senior university lecturer.
